The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Caritas Mongu representatives today paid a courtesy call on the Council Secretary of Shangombo Town Council to update him on the next phase of the project that the organization is currently implementing in the district aimed at promoting the cultivation of drought-resistant crops and strengthening food security in the district.
During the meeting, FAO officers outlined the initiative, which focuses on supporting the production of drought-tolerant crops such as millet, sorghum which are food security crop suited to Shangombo’s climatic conditions.
The programme is set to benefit over 500 farmers across the district and will run for one (1) year.
Beneficiaries on this project will receive a package consisting of fertilizer, maize, six (6) chickens, and five (5) goats, designed to enhance both crop and livestock production while promoting household resilience against climate change.
The project is being implemented in four (4) agriculture camps or wards namely
1. SIMU
2. SIPUMA
3. KAUNGA MASHI
4. BESHE
FAO representatives emphasized that the success of the programme will rely on close collaboration between the Council and implementing partners. Shangombo Town Council is expected to provide oversight, coordination, and community mobilization to ensure effective implementation and sustainability of the initiative.
Speaking during the courtesy call, the Council Secretary welcomed the programme and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to work hand in hand with FAO to ensure the intended objectives are achieved. He noted that the project aligns with the Council’s goal of promoting sustainable livelihoods and improving food security among rural communities.
The visit reflects FAO’s continued efforts to strengthen partnerships with local authorities and implement practical measures that empower communities to adapt to the effects of climate change through sustainable agricultural practices.
