The 2023/2024 farming season was marked by severe drought that impacted most regions of the nation, resulting in poor harvests and significantly affecting 84 districts nationwide, including Shangombo district.
In response to this drought, President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema declared it a national disaster, leading to the implementation of intervention measures to prevent starvation due to the meager harvests.
Consequently, government, through the Ministry of Community Development and Social services raised the social cash transfer from K200 to K400 per month for a duration of 12 months.
Furthermore, the department identified individuals who are vulnerable and severely affected by hunger under a program known as Drought Response-Emergency Social Cash Transfer, providing beneficiaries with K400 monthly for a year.
The primary goal is to empower recipients with financial resources to purchase essential commodities like food for survival. In an effort to assist more affected and vulnerable individuals in the identified 84 districts, the government secured support from external organizations, such as the World Food Program (WFP), which will provide K800 to identified vulnerable individuals to alleviate the drought’s impact in the mentioned districts, including Shangombo district.
Following these drought response interventions, Shangombo Town Council Chairperson Ms. Inonge Mubika conducted an extensive two-week community sensitization meetings in all twelve wards of Shangombo constituency to raise awareness about the government’s efforts to mitigate hunger effects.
Ms. Mubika urged beneficiaries to utilize the funds wisely and refrain from spending them on non-essential activities like alcohol consumption.
Community members expressed profound gratitude for the government’s support in aiding the vulnerable and those severely impacted by the drought.
